Soil Analysis Services

Arborist Consulting Solutions, LLC

Soil-related problems are the number one cause of declining tree health. Whether it’s unseen compaction, imbalanced pH, poor drainage, or nutrient lock-out, the majority of tree decline cases can be traced back to conditions below the surface. Trees rely on healthy soil not only for structural support, but for essential elements like oxygen, water, and minerals. When the soil environment is disrupted, trees struggle silently—often showing signs of stress only after significant damage has already occurred.

At Arborist Consulting Solutions, LLC, we specialize in diagnosing and resolving these underlying soil issues. With over 40 years of experience in the arboriculture industry, our certified team offers professional soil analysis designed to detect hidden problems that impact tree health. We provide services to homeowners, landscapers, municipalities, and legal professionals, delivering accurate, data-driven assessments and practical, science-based solutions to restore and protect tree vitality.

Soil Analysis

The Importance of Soil in Tree Health

Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving tree. It must provide a balanced combination of air space, moisture retention, and nutrient availability. A healthy soil structure supports root expansion, fosters beneficial microbial activity, and allows for the proper uptake of essential elements. When these factors are disrupted, trees suffer—often slowly and subtly.

Soil Compaction

Soil compaction occurs when soil particles are pressed tightly together, reducing pore space. This condition commonly results from repeated foot traffic, vehicle movement, heavy equipment use, or construction activity near the root zone. Compacted soil restricts the flow of air and water, making it difficult for roots to breathe and grow. As a result, trees in compacted areas often develop weak root systems, struggle with water uptake, and show signs of stress such as wilting, leaf scorch, early color change, or dieback. Over time, compaction can significantly reduce a tree’s life expectancy.

Soil pH Imbalance

Soil pH influences the chemical availability of nutrients. When the pH is too low (acidic) or too high (alkaline), certain nutrients become bound in the soil and unavailable to the trees roots. In acidic soils, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium may be deficient. In alkaline soils, common deficiencies include iron, manganese, and zinc—often resulting in chlorosis (yellowing leaves with green veins). Even when fertilizers are applied, trees cannot benefit if the pH is not within a suitable range for nutrient absorption. Soil pH also affects root function and microbial activity, both of which are critical for long-term tree health.

Additional Soil-Related Issues

Beyond compaction and pH, several other soil conditions can negatively affect tree performance:

• Poor Drainage: Saturated soils reduce oxygen availability to roots, causing them to suffocate or rot.
• Salinity: Excessive salt from de-icing, irrigation, or fertilization can disrupt water uptake and damage fine root tissue.
• Contamination: Soils near construction zones, industrial sites, or former agricultural areas may contain toxins such as heavy metals or chemical residues harmful to trees and soil biology.
